FAQ

  • How do I join?

You don’t have to be a member to participate in our SOGA-funded events or join our discord, but to join our general meetings or coffee chats please talk to someone on the executive team or email boilerbc@purdue.edu. More information in Members -> Join.

  • What books do you read?

At the start of every semester, we gather a list of books from all our members. This list is quite diverse, but is generally composed of fiction with a disproportionate amount of fantasy and science fiction. Each month, our members vote on a subset of the list and the most popular wins. Additionally, our board will curate a collection of books that fit the monthly theme for the second book of the month, with another majority vote being the deciding factor. Check out some past books in the Books We’ve Read page.

  • How often and where do you meet?

We meet several times a month! There is a two hour monthly meeting where we discuss the books of the month. Reading both (or any) of them is not necessary! Our talks are kept spoiler free. We also have two informal meetings a month called Coffee Chats which is a great way to get to know fellow book lovers. We also have themed events during the semesters, with the details being announced via discord, Instagram and on the website!

  • How can I get involved and contribute?

Just read! The more people we have eager to talk about a book the better our meetings will be. The best way to stay involved beyond that is to join our discord! Contributing to the club is as simple as engaging with other members and filling out the forms we send out. We also have a club library for members if you have any used books that you want to share. If you really want to go the extra mile, consider joining the Communication Committee!

  • What is the Communication Committee (CC) and how do I join it?

The CC is a group of volunteering members who work under the current Communications Officer to help the board out, plan events, and maintain various social media like the Instagram and Website. It is disbanded at the end of each year with applications for the next year beginning at the start of the Fall semester. If you are interested in joining, just let any board member know in person! There are no requirements.

  • I have an idea for an event. How should I share it?

You can write your ideas in the club suggestions discord channel, talk about it a a coffee chat or general meeting, email us at boilerbc@purdue.edu, or message our board members directly! Our team is eager to hear any feedback you may have.

  • English is not my first language. Should I join the club?

Absolutely! Our founder is not a native speaker and many of our members come from countries where English is not the first language. Reading and discussing books in English can be intimidating but the club was created under the principle of being a safe space where you can grow your passion about books and discuss with other people who are understanding and kind. That being said, in our events we don't force anyone to talk and you can always join the conversation when you feel like you are comfortable doing so.

  • What's been the club's favorite book?

Our highest rated book last year was Six of Crows at 4.31 out of 5. Following that is The Book Thief with 4.18! We send out rating forms after each monthly meeting. You can view all of them in the Book’s We’ve Read page.
